We feed our chinchillas on Charnwood Pellets as we find the chin's cant get enough of them and with new chin's that come to us I find when I start mixing charnwoods in with the food they are used to they eat all the charnwoods and leave what they are used to so its no problem weaning them of their old stuff

We also give our chin's alfalfa either in hay or pellet/compressed form depending on what we decide to buy at the time,

http://www.charnwood-milling.co.uk/store/erol.htmlIt is very common for new chinchilla owners to buy the mix food which is available in the shops (For example: Charlie Chinchilla,Vital and Pets at home musli style chinchilla mix these are just a few of the musli style mixes available)
These sort of foods contain regular treat foods which most of the time you will find your chinchillas will pick out what they like(normally the treats) and leave the rest, the way the makers of these foods work is they assume the chinchillas will eat all of what is included in it meaning they get a balanced diet, but from experience we know this is not what happens.. This is why along with most breeders and chinchilla owners we recommend to stay well clear of these sort of mix foods because they could do more harm than good in the long run...

Photos of food you should not feed your chinchillas
Foods like what is in these photos can and will shorten the life of your chinchilla and will also increase their chances of getting diabeties and other health problems, we recommend you steer well clear of any food that looks like this because it is not sutable for a healthy chinchilla
