Please think carefully before Breeding Chinchillas...

Unfortunately some people see chinchillas as a money making animal because they are exotic pets and they like to just go into a Pet Shop or advert in a Newspaper or the Internet and grab the first chinchillas available and think yeah we shall breed with them.. this is how we as a chinchilla rescue and re-home always end up with so many chinchillas in need of good loving forever homes.

The other reasons we end up with so many unwanted chinchillas is because people buy a chinchilla and they believe it is to be a certain sex then go off an buy another which they again believe is the same sex as their original chinchilla but they don't actually check the sex before introducing them.. As you can imagine hey presto around 111 days after they have mated out pops a baby or two sometimes even three or four!!!

We cant stress enough how very important it is to ensure you know the correct sex of your chinchilla before trying to get them a friend, Please see our page  http://www.joeychinchilla.co.uk/sexingyourchinchilla.htm Which will tell you how to sex your chinchilla correctly

There are several options in breeding chinchillas here are some of the options aswell as tips on when to seperate the babies from their parents

Breeding

Basic Rules of Breeding Chinchillas

1) Never breed from rescued Chinchillas

2) Never breed from Pet Shop bought chinchillas that you do not know the history of

3) Never breed a Black Velvet with another Black Velvet (this can result in the lethal factor) (this applies with all velvets so do not mix brown and black together either)

4) Never breed a White with another White (this can result in the lethal factor)

Tips on when to separate babies

Once Babies are 8-10 weeks old it is best to start weening them this means remove them from being with their Mum and putting them in another cage

At the age of  8-10 weeks separate boys from girls otherwise they could end up mating

None of our chinchillas leave here until they are 12 weeks old or over

Welcome
