Before buying a Chinchilla

Before buying a chinchillla please take into account the following.....

1)Chinchillas are nocturnal which means they are not suitable pets for children to have in thier bedrooms

2)They can live up to 20 years plus (although the average age for a pet chinchilla is between 8-10 years)

3)They must not get wet

4)They need regular dust baths

5)They need plenty of hay

6)They need good quality food

7)They need fresh water daily

8)They need plenty of time spent handling them and making sure they are healthy and happy

9)They need to come out for a run in somewhere that is safe and chinproof

10)They need lots of love

Pointers

You need to decide when buying a chinchilla how much time you will be able to spend with it, if you think the chinchilla may get lonely you should consider buying a same sex pair (either 2 females or 2 males) so they can keep each other company when you are not around

You need to consider what size cage will be suitable for them

You will need to decide where in the house you will be keeping them (They cannot get to hot as the heat can kill them) or if you are planning on them being kept in an outside bulilding you need to make sure it wont be damp in there.
