Hobby Breeder,Small Rescue & Re-home
Member of the NCS
I am a breeder in Eastleigh,Hampshire UK, I have been breeding chinchillas for 4 years but have kept them as my pets for over 6 years, All chinchillas I breed from come from the top breeding lines in the country, including Busher, Spooner, Cave, Pearson, Bailey and other quality breeding lines, Unfortunately I am unable to show chinchillas myself due to having a condition called Agoraphobia.
My husband and I also take in rescue chinchillas and re-home some of them, we started this website back in November 2006 and by November 2007 we had taken in 65 rescue & re-home chinchillas. Unfortunately not all chinchillas that came to us in that time made it because of the condition they were in when they arrived and due to the large number taken in throughout that time it has meant we have only been able to take in a small number of rescue & re-home chinchillas and degus over the last year, But we feel that even if we can only help a few it is better than not helping at all and we are still a rescue just a small one.
We have taken in many old chinchillas and feel they have the right to now stay put and be happy, not moved on to "yet another home" so we have a lot of permanent rescues that live with us, We feel that even the old chinchillas deserve that "forever home" they so deserved from the very start of their life so we give them everything they need to live out their last years with us, we do have some chinchillas for re-homing too but we are in no rush to move any chinchillas on because they are so very special to us and we have to try and ensure they go to the best loving forever homes when they do leave us.
My Agoraphobia means I have all day to look after all of the chinchillas and give them everything they need and my husband joins in at evening times after he finishes work, every chinchilla we have no matter if they have been bred here, rescued or re-homed with us are all very special and get the very best we can give them.
When we first started taking in re-homes and getting them new homes we used to provide all the information we had been given, we did this on our own pedigree sheets but told the people that were giving the chinchilla or chinchillas a home that they are re-homes and we are only providing the information so that they know as much as we do... unfortunately we have been made aware that some people have gone on to re-home the chinchillas again, this is very disappointing to us but we do understand circumstances change and sometimes people have to give up the pets they love...
The sad thing is some people then sell on the chinchillas we have let them home, but the old paperwork which we made very clear to them was for information only has been passed on to new owners and told that they are pedigrees and because of the way our chinchilla program works people have no reason to doubt the paperwork... We are trusting people and expect people to be like us, again we are aware that this is not the case with everyone and they have omitted to tell the new owners that the paperwork handed on is not pedigree information, just the information we had available to us at the time of re-homing, we no longer provide this information on these sheets and have not done so for a few years.
Please be aware our chinchillas will have one of our own specific breeder codes
if there is not one of our
breeder codes on the paperwork we DID NOT breed the chinchilla
and we do not recommend the chinchilla is put into breeding! The reason for this is we are not aware of its gene pool and we cannot give you anymore information on where they came from.
If you take on a chinchilla and have been told they come from us, please contact us to confirm this and we will do all we can to help.
Unfortunately some people see chinchillas as a money making animal because they are exotic pets and they like to just go into a Pet Shop or advert in a Newspaper or the Internet and grab the first chinchillas available and think yeah we shall breed with them.. this is how we as a chinchilla rescue and re-home always end up with so many chinchillas in need of good loving forever homes.
The other reasons we end up with so many unwanted chinchillas is because people buy a chinchilla and they believe it is to be a certain sex then go off an buy another which they again believe is the same sex as their original chinchilla but they don't actually check the sex before introducing them.. As you can imagine hey presto around 111 days after they have mated out pops a baby or two sometimes even three or four!!!
